1. Find two vocab words that you didn't previously know and define them (from the story).
2.Give one example of one of the five elements of showing writing.
3.In this story, the house has some of the same capabilities as the house in The Veldt. What similarities do you see?
4. Though Ray Bradbury wrote this story a long time ago, he touched on human characteristics that never change. How do the characters actions, thoughts, worries, etc. ring true to our world today? Can you think of situations that are similar in our society as what this fictional family is facing?
5. The Mother in this story seems to allow fear to rule her life (BEFORE THE DAD DIES). Support my theory with concrete details (examples from the story) and your own comments (CM's) to prove that statement true (even if you don't think it is true!).
6. What would be a good theme - or moral - to this story?
7. Who is telling this story? What point of view is that? Why do you think that the author doesn't tell this story from another point of view - like the way The Veldt is told?
8. Who stands out as the static character?
9. Since Ray Bradbury wrote this story, many new things have been learned about space and science. Find one example of something we've learned or something our society has done in space since this story was first published.
10. Without doing research on Ray Bradbury, what do you think his childhood was like? What do you think he was like as an adult? What do you think he would stand-up for in our world today? How do you think he would feel about our society's desire to search for other life forms on different planets, or space travel, etc.

Question 1
Tarmac - a runway
Retort - to reply
Question 2
Power verb -Fireflies are HOVERING above mother's dark hair to light her path.
Question 3
The bed sings and rocks Doug to sleep. The table makes them toast.
Question 4
Some people are afraid of death. The family in the story were afraid that dad was going to die in space.
Question 5
The mom tells her son that she thinks that the dad is going to die every time he goes to space.
#1
apprehensively-anxiously or fearfully
crimson-dark purplish red
#2
The fireflies cast moving bits of light on her white face. He is using different power verbs and is describing the mom's face.
#3
There are lights that go out automatically
#4
Everyone is worried about death and about your loved ones never coming back or seeing you. Just like families who have a relative in the military, they are scared they will never make it home. So instead, they pretend that that person is not alive so that it makes it easier if they really never do come home.
#5
The mother told the son that the reason she stares off behind the dad is because like I said in the question before this, she wants to make it easier on herself if her husband never comes back. This is showing that she is ruining her life and her sons life because when the dad does come home, she acts like she isn't having fun. That makes Doug feel probably guilty for having fun, when his mom is not. Also, when the dad isn't home, the mom doesn't talk about him. That most likely makes the boy feel like he can't talk to his mother about his dad because it will upset her.
#6
A good moral to this story is you should enjoy what you have, not take advantage of it, but enjoy it while it is here. In the blink of an eye it can all be gone.
#7
Doug, the boy, is telling his, or the, story. It is in 1st person point of view because Doug talks about HIS dad and HIS mom and HIS feelings. It is only told in 1st person point of view, it doesn't change.
#8
Mrs.Prato, what do you mean by static?
#9
We have learned how to fly rocket ships, not to space and back in three months, but learned how to fly period. Also, a little bit after this book was published, one of the presidents, I forgot who, but one of them sent the first man on the moon.
#10
I think Ray Bradbury was a very fun and imaginative child. He wanted to be able to express his ideas in a different way than most, so when he became an adult, he started writing. Now, if he was still alive, he would probably spend time in space research and come up with more ideas on what to do in space. Hey, he had an imagination, why not use it?!
Sorry I answered it all at once. I had some extra time on my hands and I felt really...... something having to do with doing this.
Question 1
errant:wandering, straying from proper course
centrifuge:a defice that pushes matter outward by revolving at a high rate of speed, as a labortory machine that seperates particles of varying density.
Question 2.
The electrical fireflies were hovering above Mother's dark hair to light her path.
Question 3.
The table could make food, they had automatic lights; fireflies that followed them around until they went to bed.
Question 4.
Today people are afraid of losing there loved ones and the loved ones are afraid of losing the people who love them. Here the father does not wish to leave his family, but his desire to see whats new sends him back to space. While the mother does not wish to lose the father so shes him dead as to ease the pain and so it wont hurt as much when he really is dead.
Question 5.
The mother lets fear control her life because she pictures the father as dead and sees as if he is invisable. But when she forgets to picture him as dead and acts as if he is alive she breaks down and cries because it hurts so much. I think she does this because there are so many ways to die in space and to lose him would be awful but if he is not there(in her mind) then it wint be as bed when he is really gone.
Question 6.
A good moral to this story would be live life to the fullest but don't take advantage of it. In a blink of an eye though you know it is coming you will not be ready and it will all disapear.
Question 7.
Doug is telling the story. It is first person point of view. I think the author is telling the story from Doug's point of view because of how it is so personal to Doug and how his father said he would stay home and space took him.
Question 8.
Doug's mother stands out as a static character.
Question 9.
man has walked on the moon and sent probe to Mars.
Question 10.
Ray Bradbury's life was probally full of scientists discovering new things and he probally day dreamed all the time. Ray Bradbury as an adult probally was still a day dreamer and wanted to discover new and interesting things. I think he would stand up for scientific discovery. I think he would support or desire to see new things and planets and people in other worlds.
6. I think the moral of the story is the grass is not always greener on the other side. The dad could not make up his mind if he wanted to stay on earth or space.
7. The boy is telling the story. It is first person.Maby it is told in different point of view because the auther wants to switch up the chapters and make it sound diffent.
8. I think both mom and were static charicters because the dad always thought that he would stay on earth but never did. The mom's emotion never changed because when the dad was home she still pretended that he wasn't.
9. In the book it talks about going to Pluto. We have found out that Pluto is not a real planet it is a dwarf planet.
10. I think that he had kind of a sad life because all of his stories someone dies or gets hurt.
NOOOOOOO!!!!IT DID IT AGAIN!!!
1.planetoid-asteroid
centrifuge-something that rotates at a high speed.
2."he gazed at the stars" they used gazed insted of looked.
3.The table can make food, and there are lots of electronic tools to help with every day life.
4.well, if someone we knew got killed in a car crash we would not want to go into a car again, just like if the dad died they would not like to look at where he died ever again.
5.she says that every time the dad goes into space she thinks he died and when hes alive she still thinks hes dead, and never looks
at him because hes "dead".
6.a good moral would be- if you want to quit QUIT, because the dad wanted to quit but he never did and he eneded up dying.
7.Doug is telling the story(1st person)the author put it in 1st person so we would know his thoughts and reactions.
8.The dad stands out at the static character because he always works as a spaceman and never quits, even though he always wants to.
9.One new thing is that Pluto is not a planet.
10.Maybe his father left him at an early age.As an adult i think he was very into space and the universe. Maybe he would stand up for fathers who work for a long period of time (e.g. marines, astronots.) i think he would be very excited about what we are doing today to find out about other living organisms on different planets.
Chello....
1) errant-roving or wandering
apprehensively-anxious/uneasy
2) page 66-third paragraph- quietly, holding my breath
3) There was a bed that rocks and sings you to sleep. There was electronics in the kitchen.
4) This story relates to a father going to fight in Iraq.
5) Lilly knows her husband will be gone for long periods of time, so she thinks of him as "dead."
6) Don't make a big decision without really thinking it over.
7) Doug is the narrator. It is 1st point of view. I think it is written like that so we can feel his emotions.
8) What is a static character????
9) We have learned that pluto is not a planet.
10) I think he had a hard childhood. As an adult he is probably very interested in the stars and things like that. he would probably stand up for something for science or astronauts. I think he would believe us about the aliens.
p.s. I think that Ray Bradbury is disopointed that we don't have all the gadgets that he writes about. Also, Mrs. Prato, did you go to see him at the Temecula Library this summer?
1 centrifuge- an apparatus that rotates at high speed and by centrifugal force separates substances of different densities.
merciless- pitiless or cruel
2 simile-dad was listening or singing or watching things on all sides of hime, holding onto things as if the world were a centrifuge going so swiftly that he might be flung off away from us at any instant.
3 the table could make the food and the lights go on automatically
4 losing a love one like the family in the story losed their dad.
5 lilly always thinks that the dad is dead beacuse if he's gone for a long time with no way of being able to talk to him you would want to think he's dead.
6 a good moral would be that if you dont want to do that job or something else you should quit not like the dad.
7 doug is tell the story. it's told in 1st point of view. i think that the author dosen't tell it in a different piont of view because he wont let his emotions out.
8 i think the mom was the static character.
9 we have learned how fly air planes and also we learned pluto wasnt a plant.
10 I think Ray Bradbury was a very imaginative child and when he grow up he decided to write books using his imagines. if he was still here i think he would still be writing and exploring space.
RAY BRADBURY IS STILL LIVING PEOPLES!!!!! HE DIDN'T DIE!!!!!!
Oh yea Lizzie did you go see him? I really wanted to go but someone told me it was only for teens.
1. nebula:a cloud of interstellar gas and dust
centrifuge:rotate at very high speed in order to separate the liquids from the solids
2. personification:"...while our house was asleep..."
3. the table makes toast and the automatic lights
4. People dying and the famalies thinking they are already dead. That is happening with the war. Many people in families have died and some people were already prepared for the news.
5. "Mom shot me a frightened glance." The Mom is frightened because she doesn't want the Dad to go back.
6. Make the best of something while you have it because some people areless fortunate.
Wait Lizzie you're not a teen!
Static Character is a character that doesn't change.
7. Doug. 1st person. It is very important in the part of understanding the story to know his thoughts and feelings.
8. The dad because he never changed his mind for 10 years about going back to space.
9. On June 16, 1963, Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.
10. I think Ray Bradbury had a happy loving family but many people teased him about how he looked and wrote(as a child). As an adult Ray was probably nerdy and into science and books.
Mrs. Prato I think he already knows the last two questions on #10because HE IS STILL LIVING!!!!!
I think we should write a letter to him.
1.errant- journeying or traveling
centrifuge-a machine that rotates and with centrifugal force seperates substances
2.Simile- "It fit as close as a glove fits to a slender long hand."
3.The whole house is robotic. there are also air flues.
4. The characteristics that the characters and modern humans share is that we rely heavily on technology. At the beginning of this year I got an e-mail titled "You know you're 2007 when..." it told of all these things that used to be done commonly by people and now is all done electronically (like playing solitaire for example)
5. An example from the story is that she cries every time she's around her husband and they're happy. She cries because she is always afraid that if she gets latched on to that happiness and something bad happens she'll be crushed.
6. A good moral to this story would be embrace every moment you have with some one you love, because in the blink of an eye they could be gone.
7.Doug is telling this story. It is in 1st person. I think the author told the story this way so we could get the emotion from doug's point of view. His emotions, his thoughts, etc.
8. A standout static character would be the mom. During the whole story she pretends the dad is dead and only comes alive when he visits. Even when he's there she tries not to get to close to him as if he were infected with some super-contagious disease.
9.We've actually been to the moon since this book was written. (The Illustrated Man was published in 1951, we landed on the moon in 1969)
10.I think Ray bradbury's childhood was probably filled learning, reading, and long boring days. Why do I think this? Beacause if you're bored and not really doing anything you want to let creativity out! If you live a boring lifestyle you want excitement! Ray Bradbury probably had an exciting early life and my theory is probably all wrong, but
I'm guessing from his amazing stories.I think Ray Bradbury is an adult who has lived his dream and is probably very happy and smart. I think Ray Bradbury was thrilled to here when we were going to explore other planets, like Mars. He is probably concocting a new story of what we'll find there.
I write long posts!Sorry! :-)
That's a cool suggestion Sha'Mya! The book was good and I bet he likes to hear from fans! I mean he came here to Temecula! :-)
Thank You Allison!
