The Veldt

There will be 10 questions total for each chapter... don't try to do them all in one night. Remember, your reason for reading this is to be challenged! You may be used to reading coming easily and having an "A." You get an "A" for participating, so don't be overwhelmed. Challenge yourself. Take time. Give thoughtful responses over a period of time, not all in one night!

1. Ray Bradbury hinted to the story "The Veldt" at the end of the first 'chapter' "The Illustrated Man." Now that you realize this, what can you tell me about the illustrated man's tattoos and this book?
2. What is a 'veldt'?
3. This story isn't just disturbing because of the end... it has a deeper message about the role that technology plays in our lives. Keeping in mind that this book is written in 1951 - before the days of computers in our homes, cell phones, etc - what message is Ray Bradbury sending us (his future)?
4. Think about something in your home that you depend on that you think has been around for a long time. Research it. Was it widely available to most people in 1951? How is our world different from that of 1951?
5. Ray Bradbury had some interesting ideas/ inventions mentioned in this story that didn't actually exist in 1951, but do now. Stretch your mind and name one.
6. The end of the story is no doubt horrible, but some have debated that the role that the parents allowed technology to exist in their children's lives lead to their demise. How could someone possibly argue that point? Even if it's not what you think, why would some people say that?
7. Find two vocab words that you didn't already know. Define them.
8. Find an example of one of the 5 elements of showing writing. What is it? Be specific.
9. What technology in our lives do we sometimes allow to take the place of human interaction? What current social ills could be a result of this?
10. You write the last question. Read the post before yours. Answer their question, then write your own for the next person. If you are first to post to this, you don't have a question to answer, just write one.

1. The illustrated man's tatoo's tell a different story and can come to life. Each of the books 'chapters' or stories is from the illustrated man's tatoos and that not all stories have happy endings.
2.A veldt is a South American plain.
3. Even though we have all the advances in technology and they hold a great convinience, we should not let it take over our lives
4.The t.v. was wid;ey available in 1951. Our world is different from 1951 because we have made many advances in technology since then and we have more technology then they had.
5. Some houses have sensor lights that turn on when you get near to them and turn off when you go away.
6. Some people could argue that piont because the childrens parents just wanted to make the children happy and give them everything they wanted. I think some people would say that because they let technology pretty much be the parents of the house and take care of everything and didn't really interact with their kids as parents.
7. intersperse: to place at regular intervals throughout
insufferable: intolerable, difficult to endure
8. There is a great deal of sentence variety.
9. We sometimes let the t.v. get into our minds and not go outside. When we are in front of the t.v. it is basically like no one exsitsts and don't listen to anybody.Your parents would get mad at you and you could be ignoring the people in your life.
10. i think the children murdered their parents because they believed that their parents were getting in the way of their fun and they din't want them to shut the house down and because they were so dependent on the technology.

Anonymous said...

If you could live in a house with that technology and your parents acted the way the parents acted in the story would you murder them or let them live? Explain.

Anonymous said...

1. Each of the illustrated man's tatoos hint before they start the actual story and now that I've read the Veldt I believe that as Sha'Mya said this book will have a lot of irony. I enjoy irony so much because it keeps you thinking. You think one thing and then it turns out to be the complete opposite.

2.A veldt is a southern African grassland.

3. The message Ray Bradbury was sending us is that we would soon become too dependent on technology, which we have a tiny bit, but definitely not as much as Wendy and her brother, who were willing to get rid of their parents to have technology.

4.I depend on my computer so I can communicate with my dad on the webcam, also so I can complete homework assignments, such as this. The computer was not around in 1951 though a few things that added to the developement of the computer were, such as the Jacquard loom which used puched cards to create intricate patterns when making blankets automatically. In 1951 Less electronic devices were available, less crime, more carefree, WWII had ended 5 years prior so there wasn't much to worry about, but I wouldn't know every little detail of the 50's, maybe the whole sockhop, sodaparlor part was just that, a small part of the whole picture.

5.One thing similar to what we have today are the beds that help you sleep, sure that don't exactly have beds that rock us until we're asleep but we can adjust them to a comfortable spot so we can sleep.

6. Even though the parents let the kids have the technology, the kids started caring about their precious nusery more than their parents, who gave them practically everything they ever wanted and loved them!

7.Oh oops I listed the wrong words for the wrong chapter I put my "The Veldt" words for "The Illustrated Man" words, besides I cannot think of any more words. Sorry Mrs.Prato! :-[

8.I'll finish tomorrow morning it's too late. I fell asleep right after I came home and had to finish homework.

I just lost all my 10 responses ! ERRR! What am I doing wrong. I don't want to have to retype this each time! HELP Me!

1. The tattoos come to live every night and tell a different story about the future.

2. A veldt - a South African grassland

3. Bradbury is telling us technology is not always a good things. We become depended on it. It often spoils us. We need to be careful that technology doesn't take over our lives.

4. I depend on my computer. Computers were not widely available in 1951. They have made our lives much easier. We can pay bills through our computer, we can send messages, and we can research any topic as quick as a click on google.

5. He mentioned that the walls sang songs to them. Some houses have intercom systems that can play music through out the house.

6. The parents spoiled the children. They did not have to work for anything. Technolgoy did everything for them. The chidren got to the point that they did not want to do anything for themselves. When the parents realized this had happened and tried to change things the children got angry and killed them.

7. sensitized - to become sensitive to something

persecuted- to treat someone cruelly or unfairly

8. Figuartive language - Similie " They went off to their air closet, where a wind sucked them up like brown leaves up the flue to their slumber rooms."

9. email - we don't even have to call, or talk to anyone these days. People need to spend time talking to each other. We get so busy in our lives that we don't make time for people.

10. I would not murder my parents! I always listen to my mom and dad! NOT! ;) I think we would have a hard time surviving without our parents. We kinda need them, don't you think?

If you could choose any type of furture techology to have in your house what would if be, why would you need it, and do you think in the long run it will be benificial? (Sorry that is 3 quesitons.)

1. All of the stories in this book are the Illustrated Man's tattoos.

2. a veldt is an african grssland

3. Technology plays a HUGE part in live today. We rely on computors to send messages to people, order things, and games. Everyone watches T.V. for news, weather, or entertainment.

4. I NEED music. In 1951 I know there was music, but no ipods, cd's, or mtv, like we have today.

I will be back w/ more info.

5. In the Veldt they had a machine that made them meals. Today it is called a microwave.

6. I believe that it is partly the parents fault, but the kids took advantage of it.

question 3: ray bradbury is trying to get out the message that no matter how great technoogy get you must never let it take over your life

question 4: back then most people had simple plain, understandable vechiclels that were so simple you can make your own. now we have so many electrion parts in our cars that you need to get a licensed professional to fix our car. since 1951 we have changed our own style of living.

The Veldt
1. The Illustrated mans tatoos come alive at night and tell stories through pictures. The veldt is one o these stories.
2. A veldt is an African plain, savanna, or a grassland.
3. Ray Bradbury is telling us that although technology can be useful we can't let it do everything for us. A little hard work is good for you like that saying you can't have too much play or work. They have to balance eachother.

Anonymous said...

4.I rely heavily on my computer. I do all of my homework on it and since my family doesn't have cable if there is something important on the news we have to view it through the computer. In 1951 there was no such thing as computers. Although their technology in the 50's was much less efficient, the world was less violent and more pure. there was not a war or bombs and all of the destructive weapons that are in our world today.
5. Some rich people have lights that are motion activated and walls can be made with speakers built in to the frame work.
6. George and Lydia Hadley gave up their responsibility to take care of their children. In doing this they basically let the huose adopt their kids. When George qnd Lydia tried to seperate Wendy and Peter from their house in the kids minds they felt like they were being kidnappped from their guardians(the house). Think about it if you were suddenly kidnappened from the person or thing that had clothed and nurtured you your whole life wouldn't you kill your kidnappers if that was your only option.
7.telapethic: to communicate throgh ones mind.
crystalline:resembling crystal/strikingly clear or sparkling.
8. Almost none of the sentences start with the same word and they use a lt of adjectives.ex. papery, exquisite.
uh, oh i think my mom's calling me. Be back in a sec.

9. I have an interactive game that has a little person inside it and once you've programed the game person's personality it can have a conversation with you. Sometimes instead of calling up my friends to talk to them i'll chat with the interactive person instead.I think this makes me more shy.
10. (answering tyler mckays question) I know I need my parents. They help me with my homework and take care of me. I'd be in a pretty sorry fix without them.Do you think the parents were right to let the house do everything for them?
OMG i'm so tired i'll write more tommorow.

Anonymous said...

1.The relationshop to the illustrated mans tatoos and this book is that the tatoos tell many stories, and so does this book.

2.A veldt is an african grassland, where lions, zebras, and giraffes live.

3.Ray Bradbury is sending us the message that technology that "helps us" is really ruining us and making our lives more horrible.

4.I depend on a refrigerator because it keeps all my foods frsh and ready to eat. The refrigerator was available to many people in 1951. Our world is different to the world in 1951 because we have more technology that gives us more UNHEATHY things to do....so back in 1951 people were alot more healthy and today people are not so healthy due to technology.

5.One of the inventions that didn't exist then but exists now is the automatic shoe shiner, some people have those in their homes, but only rarely, and profressional shoe shiners use them.

6.Someone could argue that point because there could have been a different reason that the kids could have gone mad....there might have been a personal problem, such as divorce, or other family issues. Some people might think that technology was the main reason of the children's insanity because I do agree that there was way too much technology in the house, but people mostly think that because technology seems to be the main problem between everything in this short story, and i seems as though the children can't live without it.

7.Veldt-African grassland
Flue-a passage for any type of gas to travel through. (ex/ chimney)

8.An example ofA simile is on page 11 the author says "he could see his wife, far down the dark hall, like a framed picture, eating her dinner abstractedly.

9.We watch T.V too much and play video games too much which makes it so we do not interact with other people outside and we do not get enough exersize outside. The social skills that take part that could be a result of this is the skills of shyness, because we do not want to talk to people because of our shyness, so instead we e-mail people or just sit and watch T.V instead.

10.(answering Heather H's question)
I do not think it was a right decision for letting the parents let the house do everything for them, it just makes the kids lazy and irresponsible and they might not be very good adults when they grow up. Why do you think the parents didn't put a stop to the "technology consuming kids" earlier?

Question 1: The tattoos show what is going to happen in the future. They are silent, but your imagination and the vivid images enable you to imagine and hear what everyone is saying. The Illustrated Man is afraid of these tattoos.

I'm not sure if I answered this correctly or if I answered the right question!

Anonymous said...

Mrs. Prato,
I get that the kids killed theyre parents, but did the lions eat George and Lydia Hadley, and if so how because earlier in the story it says that the nursery is just mirror images and they can't hurt you. I'm not sure If they died of heart attack or not.
P.S. sorry if the answer is really obvious and I'm just not getting it.

Anonymous said...

1. The illustrated man tattoos tell a story of what going to happen in a person’s life.

2. Veldt means any of the open grazing areas of South America.

3. He is saying that technology is that that important and it could make you spoil.

4. I depend on my computer because you could find information about anything and you could email your friends and family. There was no computer in 1951.

5. In some house you could asked what you want like turn on the TV or something like that.

6. The parents gave the children’s all the things the wanted even a house that did everything for them and that made them spoil. the parents wanted to start doing things with out technology, but the kids didn’t want to go away from the technology so it led them to kill their parents.

Have to go I will finish answering the questions later

7. vultures:A person of a rapacious, predatory, or profiteering nature.

subsided:to sink to a low or lower level to become quiet, less active, or less

8. simile on page 12,wendy and peter were coming in the front door, cheecks like peppermint candy, eyes bright blue agate marbles...

9. a cellphone could take over our life because you could get obbsesed over it by texting alot or talking on the phone all day.

10.(answering bradons qustion)
i think they didnt put a stop because they thought it was doing anything bad to their children.

would you want technology or your parents explin why?

Question 1: The illistrated mans tatoos show diffrent stories of peoples lives from past and future.

Question 2: A veltd is an area in an african grassland.

Question %: Bradbury imagination thought of the nursery which is nowlike televisions to us.

The Veldt questions now...
Question one: The illustrated man's tattoos really do come to life and tell stories about people, I can tell the book will be many different stories that are happening taht night on the illustrated man's body.

Question 2: A veldt is an African grassland.

Question 3: He is telling us that technology will be bad and will sort of take over our lives.

Question 4: My stove is very important to me and my family, and it was available in the year 1951. Our world is HUGELY different than that of the year 1951, we have so muc hmore technology such as computers, portable drives, credit cards, cell phones, and many other examples of modern technology. I believe that our lives are SO much easier than lives of people who lived in 1951.

Question 5: We have the lights that are motion sensored liek the ones in the story, that automatically turn on when someone, or something, passes in its sensors range.

Anonymous said...

Question 6: I think that it isn't logically true that your demise will come out of technology, but it could be said, as if you let everything mechanical do everything for you, and then it all suddenly shuts off. You wouldn't know how to do any work or anything which would leave you with nothing, considered to be a demise.

Question 7: I did not know clinical and superactionary.
Clinical-Involving or based on direct observation of the patient.
Superractionary-I could not find a definition for this word, its on page 9. about a third of the way down the page.

Question 8: On page 11 Ray wrote "The only flaw to the illusion was the open door through which he could see his wife, far down the dark hall, LIKE A FRAMED PICTURE, eating her dinner abstractedly." This is an example of showing writing, figurative language to be exact, as it is a simile.

Question 9: The computer is something we sometimes let substitute for human interaction, as instead of talking to someone we go on the computer and can talk in caht rooms, or go to Q A websites, and other things like that. This can lead to someone being very insocial and staying inside, on the computer for long periods of time frequently.

Question 10: (answering vanessas qusetion)
I would much rather my parents over technology because I don't think that technology could ever replace my parents. My parents give me advice, help me when I need it, and also they know what to say to make me feel better whenever I'm sad. No machine could ever do all of that, at least not as good as my parents can.
New Question for next poster:
Why do you think the parents in The Veldt don't ever interact with their children throughout the story? Also explain why the children were so very attached to the nursery, and still grew to hate their parents as they never did anything mean to the children. (sorry its so long) =/

Anonymous said...

#2 a veldte is an African field or grassland

Anonymous said...

#3 The future is coming too quickly and we are taking advantage of all of the things we have. You need to do some things by yourself, don1't just let the machines do them

#4 My computer

In 1951, the first commercail production computers appeared. Only if you had a wealthy business you could afford a computer. They were really big and a lot more rare and expensive than computers today.

5 One thing that he mentioned as being "futuristic" was the light than went on as you walked past. We have those now, and come to think about it, I have a motion light in my backyard.

#10
The children murdered their parents because they felt as though they didn't matter, the house was their parents. They had no connections to them anymore. But the kids were also forgetting that in the beginning of their lives and before, their parents had to go through so much to have them. All parents do. The children were too spoiled and addicted to all of the technology that they would rather give up their parents than their house and "toys."

I think that is absolutely correct. Even though the parents realized it at the end, they should have tried to stop it earlier. You can't also just stop the kids cold turkey.

#7
odorophonics- I can't find it in the dicionary, but using context clues, I think it means like a machine that blows stuff at you and makes things that aren't real seem real.
Neurotic- emotional and sort of mental

#8
One example of showing writing is on page 12, it says: "Wendy and Peter were coming in the front door, cheeks like peppermint candies, eyes like bright blue agate marbles..."
These are metaphors and examples of figurative language

#9
Nowadays, we take advantage of computers and e-mail and aim and chat rooms and, I could go on forever. Instead we should call them on the phone or call them to come over. You will be better at communication and will be able to express more emotion.

#10
What year do you think the author wanted this story to take place in?

Anonymous said...

8. I found a simile as my part of showing writing. The comparison is of the sun and a hot paw.

9. The technology we tend to let take place of human interaction is the computer. For example instead of playing sports or outside activities we can often find ourselves playing games on the computer. Some social "ills" we may come across is being less fit and focused on excercise.

10. I have Reilly's question. I believe the author wanted this story to take place in the new millenium (the 2000's) because everyone wanted to believe the new millenium would be full of wonders, like flying cars, which we're not quite at yet. My question is:

How could the parents save themselves from their terrible fate?

Anonymous said...

Sorry Mrs.Prato butmy computer stopped working for a while.

3. Don't depend on our technology because it can take place of things important in your life.
4. Computers were not avaliable but inventors were thinking about it. Our modern day has more upgrades and new technology.
5. The kitchen made its own food today we have thingsthat make cooking easier.

6. I agree because the nursurey was basically the mother and father to the children and they should have been killed for being such bad parents.

question 7 the first when i didnt know was glade which means an open space in a forest, the second word i didnt know was aoutomaticy which means working spontanouelsly.

well i have to go eat bye ;)

8)feel that son george you have to change your ways

9)we take too much advantage of our televison this could one day completly replace our outside activety and we'd turn into potatoes

10)they could have completly shut down the system and cut off all the electricity

why did the kids kill the parents????

Anonymous said...

#10. The nursery literally became the childrens' parents. A child often copies a parent. A machine is made to complete it's mission, no matter what the cost. The children are the same. The parents are in the way of a pleasure, so they do the only thing they know how. They remove that obstacle.
