Kaleidoscope

1. Find an example of a simile
2.Why would the title of this chapter be "Kaleidoscope?" There is not only ONE right answer. Give your opinion.
3.What is ironic in this chapter?
4.Does Ray Bradbury follow the rules for dialogue as we discussed in class? What do notice that he does well (pertaining to our notes on dialogue)?
5. Do any of the characters change (dynamic character)? Which characters would be considered static (do not change from the beginning to the end of the chapter)?
6. People have come up with folk tales to describe things in nature that they do not have the scientific technology to understand. This story makes me think of a futuristic folk tale to describe where falling stars come from. Summarize a folk tale that describes how something in nature came to be (but because of our scientific understandings, we know not to be true).
7. Make up your own folk tale to describe how something in nature came to be.
8. If you could rename this chapter, what would you call it and why?
9. Who is telling this story? A narrator or a character? If it's a character, it's first person point of view. If it's a narrator, it's either an omniscient narrator or it's third person limited. If it's omniscient, we know the thoughts/ feelings of more than one character (and not because they said it aloud). If it's 3rd limited, we only know the inner thoughts or feelings of one character. Which point of view is used in this story?
10. At the end of this chapter, the author continues telling the story of The Illustrated Man from the prologue (the first chapter). What do you think will happen next?

Question 1:
The men were thrown into space like a dozen wriggling fish.

Question 2:
I think this chapter is called Kaleidopcope because in space there are many colors, like the stars and the planets and it is so bright with the million of tiny suns and it is always changing, just like a kaleidoscope.

Question 3.
The ironic thing in this story is that Hollis burns up in the atmoshpere and that a boy and mother sees him as a shooting star falling down.

Question 4.
Yes he does. I notice that he sometimes doesn't have tags after a quote and he uses many varieties. (tags before quotes, tags after, and tags interupting quotes.)

Question 5.
I think Hollis and Applegate are dynamic characters because Hollis gets mad then he doesn't. And Apllegate though he is a pain in the butt appologises to Hollis. I think Stimson is a static character because he all the way through the story wouldn't stop thinking negative.

Question 6 and 7.
Once there was a great goddess, she lived in the clouds of heaven. She was blessed with a beautiful duaghter that glowed with the summers glow. Her laugh would sing throughout the world. But during an awful thunderstorm, the sea shook, the clouds burst, and evil raged. That dreadful night the evil god of fire took the goddesses pride and joy. She sent guards all over but the chils was no where to be found. For days and nights she burst out in tears and her tears would fall to the earth. And whenever she thinks of her missing duaghter her tears fall to the earth and we experience rain.

Question 8.
If I could rename this chapter I would name it, "Lost in an Endless sea of Darkness." I would name it that because space is like an endless sea of darkness.

Question 9.
It is third limited.

Question 10.
I think another story will happen and that if Hollis makes it he will be a pile of ash on the coll dark dirt of earth.

1. They fell as pebbles fall down wells.

2. I think its called kaleidoscope when there in space lots of stars twinkle and look like a kaleidoscope.

3. The ending is kind of ironic because Hollis was falling and it didnt realy say what happen to Hollis.

4. I noticed that Ray said, said a few times but other than that I think that Ray did. I know I just mentioned that Ray said, said a few times but I think that he did good not useing said. (thats alot of saids.)

5. I think that Hollis changed because he thought that there was a good chance of people finding them. After he got hit with the metior he kind of gave up and started falling. I think Stone is a static charicter because he never gave up and he always thought someone would find him.

6. I dont understand this question.

7. Sorry this one kind of goes with #6 and I dont get that one.

8. I would name this chapter Falling Men because 2 people fall out of space.

9. A nararater is telling the stoty.( sorry dont know how to spell nararater). Third person.

10. I think he will have another dream.

Question 1: The men were thrown into space like a dozen wriggling sillverfish.

Question 2: I think this chapter is called Kaleidoscope becuase almost everyone in the story has mixed feelings just like a keleidoscope has mixed colors.

Question 3: What is ironic in this chapter is that the chapter starts out with a rocket ship exploding and separating many men with diffrent personalities into the vaste space.

Question 4: Yes, Brabury did follow our rules for dialogue. I noticed he used tag on and off throughout the story.

Question 5: The characters that change in this story are Hollis and Applegate beecause Hollis becomes brave, then angry, then scared continuesly, and Applegate is angry and lies, then he is caring and apologises. The character that would be static is Stimson for being negative and wining the whole time.

Question 6/7: In a year far before man existed giants raomed earth. theese giants were much like us except they always ate and wore fur off their prey as clothes. However one thing theese giants loved to do was fight and wrestle. So one day, right before their extiction, two of the biggest, and tallest giants fought each other in middle earth. Their rumble was strong that the earth shook and the ground cracked and spread. Now millions of years later we can still feel their rumble as earthquakes.

Question 8: I would call this chapter "Moments before Death" becuase we only know abot theese mens life right before their death.

Question 9: Its a third limited narrator.

Question 10: Ithink the Illustrated mans illustrations will give us another futuristic story.

1. The men were thrown into space like a dozen fish.

2. I think it is called kaleidoscope because when the men shoot out of the rocket, they look like a kaleidoscope.

3. The ironic thing about this story is that when Hollis figured out he was going to die, he wanted to help someone one last time. Then he falls into the Earth's atmosphere, and a boy makes a wish on him. So...he did help someone.

4. He did follow the rules. He never said "said."

5. The character that does change is Hollis. The character that does NOT change was Stimpson.

6. The story is told that after god had exalted all the animals, he asked each one if they had a special wish. The giraffe said, “Lord, my wish is to have wisdom.”
“Well spoken,” God answered, “and so you will never speak, for talkative people are fools, but silence is wisdom.” That is why the giraffe sees and hears everything, but never makes a noise.

7. Ever what why there is wind? Well…a story is told about a goddess and here baby. The goddess, Gledora, was just making her baby son, Vencilio, some nice warm soup. As she set it down in front of Vencilio, he started to cry. “Too hot,” the baby tried to say. Luckily Glendora knew how to cure it. She blew softly on his soup. Vencilio still cried. She blew again, but this time she used her power. Her power is not big for her, but for us below we feel a breeze coming from above. Next time you feel wind think of those poor goddess babies who are crying.

8. I would probably call this story Shooting Star because that is was Hollis turns into at the end.

9. Omniscient

10. I think another one of his tattoos will be visible. (Another story)

Applegate is mean! :~(

...clawed frantically, like a drowning swimmer.

2
It might be called Kaleidoscope because it is about men trapped in the stars. A k-e is a little toy thing that has you look at like a neverending galaxy of stars. The story reminded the author of the small toy.

3
Everyone ends up dying and there is really no point to the story. I didn't really get it, so that is what I think is ironic. Also, it makes you wonder what shooting stars really are.

4
Yes, he makes sure to put different characters' words into different paragraphs. But he also doesn't always say who is saying what, so it confuses me.

5
Hollis changes in the end. He realizes he wants to do something good for the world and now wishes his life had meaning. Lespere stayed the same the whole time and was happy that he had a good life.

6
The story of how the stars were formed. They say that people or creatures were banned to the sky or something crazy or that they lived in the sky and moved around in the sky. That is impossible!

7
One day, a big flock of birds were flying over Arizona. They landed on the Lake of Arizona and all of a sudden the air got so cool that the water froze. The birds freaked out and went flying away with the lake and dropped it on the Arctic Ocean, creating the glaciers (because of course when they dropped it the ice cracked). The area where the lake was is now the Grand Canyon.

8
I would call it the never-ending death because in the end everyone dies.

9
A narrator is telling the story in third person limited.

10
I think there will be a sad or scary story next because the man is turning and turning.

1.The men were thrown into space like a dozen wriggling silverfish.
2.I think this chapter is called Kaleidoscope because the setting of the story(space) contains many different colors that change frequently...just like a kaleidoscope.
3.The ironic thing is Holiis's death as a shooting star.
4.i think he does...even though said is used quite alot....he still follows the rules.
5.hollis is probably a dynamic character because he has a lot of mood swings. Stinson would be the static character because he is always crabby and negative.
6.zues gets mad and he strikes the earth with lightning which causes lightningstorms.
7.the god of air was horribly mad that the air has been polluted with acids...so everytime he smells the air and is disapointed he sends a hurricane to earth.
8.i would call this chapter "the endless vast" because we only know what happens before peoples death and after their death they drop into the endless vast of space.
9.3rd limited (i think)
10.i think the next story will be another story about death and vast space.

question 2: stone talks about how he is in a meteor shower that passes earth and how in his eyes it looks beautiful like a giant image of a kolidascope

This story is CREEPY!! Sorry.:-

1. "The man screamed and clawed frantically, like a drowning swimmer."

2.I think this story is called Kaleidoscope because not only of the shards of metal, butof the twists and turns the men go through, like Kaleidoscope pieces in a Kaleidoscope.

3.What's ironic in this chapter is that you think that they're all going to die, but one possibly survives and is carried away by strange metals.

4.Yes, I do think Ray Bradbury follwed the rules of dialogue. I notice that he used his tags appropriately, though not always different, slightly repetitive.

5.The character Applegate changes. He goes from rude and unsensitive to moderately sweeter. Also Hollis changes, He goes from keeping everybody together, to killing a man, then to helplessness (if that is how you spell it). A Static Character was Lespere. He kept talking about his wonderful life until he stopped talking.

6.Johnny Appleseed, a folktale about a man who brought apples to the entire world, planting each seed one at a time.

7. How the world came to be round: A schorching, windy day came along, but this heat & wind was stronger than any other and blew the thin flat Earth around, making it hit other planets. As it bounced around the ends turned in and it kept bouncing until the earth was like crumpled up peice of paper. The heat melted the earth slightly until it was all smooth like a blue marble. And that is how the Earth is round!

8. I would rename it Reflection because that is what the men are doing they're reflecting on their whole entire lives, what they did to come to that very moment.

9.A third-person narrator is telling this story and it is third person limited.

10.I think a horrible story will appear next because the Illustrated man is tossing and turning.

Anonymous said...

10. There will be a story about the past because all the rest have taken place in the future.

9.3rd Limited.

8. I would call it "Lost Voices" because the men are lost in space and can only hear each other's voices.

7. One day Chac, the rain god was out in his garden and looked at the sky. It looked so plain. So he decided to add more color. Choosing some basic colors, he decided to put them out after every time it rained. That is why we have rainbows.

6. The Rock House is about how we have the moon and the Sun.

5. The dynamic characters are Hollis and Applegate. The static characters are Stimson and Lespere.

4. Sometimes he doesn't use tags and says said alot. He starts a new paragraphs with new dialouge.

3. A twist in the story was when a meteor tore off Hollis' hand and when Hollis turned mean.

2. I think it is called "Kaleidoscope" because a kaleidoscope is a bunch of colorful patterns in the same tube. In the story there is a bunch of men with the same problem.

1. "When life is over it is like a flicker of bright film..."

Sorry I did these backwards, I just felt like it.

question 3: it turns out that hollis wonders if any one will see him as he burns up in the atmoshere and he is recognized as a "shooting star"

question 4:

Alex said...

3) it is ironic how he talks about if any one will see him and how a boy sees him as a shooting star

4)ray beradbury found many varities of other words then said

5)i think that hollis and the narrator realley change thourghout the story but stimson is paraniod and losses it (static) in the end.

6+7)a long time ago when the world was still young there was a gods that were working together to create a place called the universe.there were many kind gods but not all wanted this universe. fyro cruel and did not want the this universe to be crated. he tryed to kill one of the gods but his plan was foiled and he was locked up on a planet called earth.
evrey once in a while his anger and rage are sent out as thunder and lightning and torneados

8)i would name it the unconfessed beacuse all the men confess what bad things they have done

9)i think its 3rd limited

10) i think that if there was a proluge that holliss or one of the others survive and that they would go searching for the other memebers

ok phew!!!! jk jk (just kiding!)
