The Illustrated Man (1st 'chapter')

Welcome! Please reply to this post. You don't have to reply to all the posts in one night. Also, remember that you have to earn 50 points a week from the cards on the filing cabinet in the back of the room. DON'T TAKE THOSE CARDS HOME! You can put a card on my desk with a note that you need it photocopied, or you can take the card to your seat and copy it, or you can just read it. By the way, on the cards, the point values are called 'miles.'You can save up and do 100 points in a week and nothing another week, like we discussed in our meeting... or nothing for 3 weeks and 150 points in one week, etc.

Remember, you don't have to do the reading log, so you may find that you're reading less than before, but responding to this post and doing the activities on the yellow cards will be time consuming, so you may find that you are spending as much time analyzing a book as you used to reading it.

You do need to read the stories from the text in class, but you don't need to answer the ?'s at the end of the story. You don't need to read the workbook stories or do those activities. You don't do the reading log.

Please don't read ahead in the Illustrated Man because I may ask you to make predictions. Maybe, if you insist on reading ahead, I can create a different post for every chapter, and you can reply to each chapter at your pace. We'll see if I can keep up. If you MUST read but find yourself ahead, for now, read a different book of your choice, and try to stay with the group with The Illustrated Man until I can get ahead and get questions posted for other stories.

Okay, here we go:

You should have checked out The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury.

By Friday, I would like for you to read two of the stories: The Illustrated Man (that's the name of the first "chapter"... each chapter is it's own short story) and The Veldt.

Then, respond to this post - 10 questions per story; if you need help adding a comment to the post, let me know at break or at lunch. If I'm not in my room, see if I'm in Ms. Dunlap's room. Anyway, here's what you need to answer:

1. What is your name (first and last)?
2.How many pages to you typically read a night?
3.What is your favorite book?
4.What genre do you typically read (fantasy, biographies, etc.)?
5. In the first story you read, entitled "The Illustrated Man," give an example of how the author uses ONE of the 5 elements of showing writing... be specific. For example, in the first paragraph, no two sentences begin with the same word.
6. WHOA... I have to finish typing the questions later :) My baby is getting fussy (I'm at home) and it's time for me to give her a bath and put her to bed... I just wanted to start giving you the questions so you're not confused (like Frances was!) ;)
Okay, I'm back...
6. Give an example of a sensory detail in "The Illustrated Man" - something we hear, taste, or smell.
7. What kind of opinions do you have of people who have lots of tattoos? What challenges would the illustrated man face as a member of society in the year 2007? What advantages would he have, if any, by the fact that his tattoos move and tell stories? What are some possible dangers he would face because of that (moving tattoos)? What advantages and disadvantages does he have with that particular spot on his back that can show the future?
8. In the story, Ray Bradbury makes reference to several well known artists (Picasso, for instance). Research one of the artist mentioned and tell me something interesting that you learned.
9. Find two vocabulary words that you did not know before - define them.
10. Find an example of a power verb from the story.

7. People who have lots of tatoos think they are tough. He might have a hard time finding a job because people are afraid of people covered in tatoos. It does not look very professional. Maybe the government might want to hire him if his tatoos could really tell about the future. Someone might even want to use him for a research project. He would be able to warn people if something bad was going to happen. Everyone would be bothering you because they would have lots of questions about the future.

i'm back with more answers!!!
question 5) "No carnival would touch me with a ten foot pole" is a hyperbole
6) about the last paragragh the narrator said "I heard voices"
7) People with tattoos intimadate some people. I think thats why some can't find jobs. I have an example. When I used to take gymnastics there was one teacher there whose arms were covered in tattoos. None the less, she was a very good gymnast. At first she would wear tank tops and shrot sleeves, but some parents complained. She had to cover her tattoos if she wanted to keep working there. People with one tattoo don't bother me, but if someone is covered in them it does bother me. The illustrated man's tattoos are very interesting, but might scrae people away.

I will answer the rest after I do some research. bye

i'm back again.
8) I learned that Picasso was noticed at a very young age.
9) Is it vocab words from our homework???
10) peered, recall, wandered

Do we have to answer the other 10 questions this week also?

Question 7: what was this one?

Anonymous said...

question 7: People with tatoos are just like regular people, my brother has ten tatoos and he is still the same. Some challenges would be getting a good job because good jobs want people who look professional and buissness like. An advanage would be if he has kids he would have something to entertain them with. A danger would be that somebody would might want to kill him because of what they see.An advantage and disadvantage would be that he would knows what will happen to the person he is around.

2. 20-30 pages
3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollow
4. Fantasy or fairy tales
5.In "The Illustrated Man" Ray Bradbury used figurative launguage to describe the tatoos moving and acting there stpries for the man to see.
6.The illusrations on the illustrated man, when they were moving the other man could here the voices of the people in the pictures talking.
7. I think that people with tatoos are o.k. but at the same time I think it is pointless for people to cover themselves in tatoos that could not be removed. The illustrted man would probally be judged very poorly and people would stare at him and he would probally maybe maybe not be jobless. His advantages that his tatoos could tell story is that if his pictures told the future that he would know what was going to happen and that people would think its cool that they can move and tell stories. People would probally be freaked out and maybe some people would want moving tatoos and pester him about it and some people might not want to see their furture and want to get rid of him. An advantage of having a black spot on his back that tells the future is that he could see anyone's future who is standing next to him for awhile and that is cool. But a disadvantage is that some people don't want their furture to be seen.
8.oops got to raserch it bye

7. Some people with tatoos look slightly shady, I'm not judging them that way though , and most are regular run of the mill people. My dad's a marine and a lot of his marines have many tatoos. Some disadvantages the illustrated man would have would probably be that he has so many tatoos so that's one thing keeping him getting a job unless he wore turtlenecks everyday. I think the only advantage he would have from his tatoo stories is that people would be interested in them. People would also Be scared off becauase one of his tatoos shows how the person will die and it's usually tragic so that could put him in jeporady because people will be out to get him and being as unusual as he is he can't hide. I already listed one disadvantage above so I'll now list an advantage...I don't think I can come up with one. The spot on his back has no advantages.

8.Mr.Pablo Picasso was left handed. I learned this in a book of mine, some other artists were left handed as well. Like Da Vinci.

9.Veldt: an open grassland in southern Africa usually with few shrubs or trees.
flue:a passage for directing a current.

6.The illusrations on the illustrated man when the pictures move and the other guy hears people talking inside the tatoos.
7. it does bother if all their body is full tatoos but if they have few it doesnt not bother me.he will have a hard time founding a job. he could get money by telling people their future.
8. Picasso lived in Paris through the war, producing gloomy paintings in semi-abstract styles.
9. -sulphurous-pertaining to the fires of hell; hellish or satanic. fiery or heated.

5.The author uses sensory detail when he says- he had seen her painted sign by the road: Skin Illustration! Illustration instead of tatoo! artistic!

6.An example of sensory detail in the illustrated man was when the narrator saw the Illustrated man sweating, and taking off his shirt to show him his Illustrations.

7.I think that people with lots of tatoos have a hard time in life, they look like they could be tough, strong, and beat me up free at will.In the year 2007 the Illustrated man might face challenges, he might make everybody think that he is going to hurt them, and he might make people think that he was weird. He might have advantages in the year 2007 because he might get a job easier because people want to come to the store he works at to see the stories his illustrations tell, giving his manager more business, making him able to have a job. Some dangers he might face because of his moving tatoos are that he might offend someone and they might get mad at him, fire him, or hurt him. The illustrated man has advantages with the moving spot on his back because people might think it is cool to learn what their future is going to be, however if they see that the future is not one the person expected he/she will get offended and will take it very seriously, making the illustrated man angry and upset.

8.Picasso is very interesting because it is said that he painted pictures showing some polotics.

5: Ray Bradbury says that the illustated man's picture's glowed like charcoals in the half light.
6: The narrator said he could hear voices.
7: idk why but people that have a lot of tattoos kind of freak me out. The illustrated man probably wouldn't be able to find a job that easily because of the violent stories the tattoos show. The advantages he has of his tattoos is that he could be a storyteller and fortune teller. The dangers are that if he shows a person their future and it is violent that person might not like it and try to kill the illustrated man.
Some other fortune tellers might not like him because he steals their bussiness and they might try to kill him.
